Sump Pump Checklist by your Arlington Plumber
Depending on the geographical location of a home, a sump pump may be the first line of defense you have against damage from water leaks that can appear in your basement. Sump pumps are easy to operate and maintain, but most homeowners have no idea how to select the correct pump for their home. Following is a Sump Pump checklist on how to select the right one for you and your family’s needs.
1. Know the facts. Factors to consider when choosing a sump pump usually involve having an understanding of local hydrology near and adjacent to the foundation of the home. Some homes may have foundations, or basements that are below the water table. Other homes may be nearby but be in a much drier location. However, most homeowners are surprised to find out that the size of a home is not a major contributing factor in selection of the proper sized sump pump.
2. Moisture. The major factor in the proper choice of a sump pump is the amount of moisture the pump may face for both day to day and emergency situations. The greater of volume a pump is expected to move increases the amount of horsepower the motor of the selected sump pump needs to have.
3. Pricing and Size. Sump pumps are normally priced based on the horsepower of the motor. They usually come in increments of horsepower as a measure of the work ability of the pump. The most common sized sump pump is the 1/3 horsepower sump pump. Homes purchased that already have a sump pump installed will usually have this size sump pump.
4. Amount of Volume. For volumes of expected water removal as much as 3,000 gallons per hour, a ½ horsepower pump is needed. This is usually the largest size sump pump needed in any residential home. A ¼ horsepower pump is much weaker than ½ horsepower pump and slightly weaker than a 1/3 horsepower sump pump.
Because of the mathematical calculations involved in determining the amount of moisture a sump pump will move, it is always best and advisable to call your local, Arlington certified plumbing professional to provide advice specific to your home.
